Meg Flanegan
I've been a (high school) teacher for 11 years, 7 in Colorado. Originally from Rochester, NY. I moved to Colorado to pursue and enjoy an outdoor and active lifestyle. I love Boulder, Since moving here I decided I wanted to get involved in triathlon- it just looked fun and intense!!!! I came from a competitive swimming background (4- 22yrsold). In college I was nationally ranked, All- American, and inducted into my college hall of fame. Competition is in my blood!!! In 2007 I joined Boulder Triathlon Club and slowly learned a wealth of info as well as met a ton of awesome friends and training buddies. Triathlon is a lifestyle and a mindset. I truly love it and all the positive changes it has brought into my life! Last year I placed 2nd at the Alcatraz Challenge- my only goal was to not die. So I was very excited to do well, have fun, and live to tell about it! MM: What does your training mean to you? Training to me a lifestyle. It's what I do. I love racing- but it's the training that is a part of my daily life. It requires time, discipline, and is fun. I used to see training as kind of a drag, but this season I'm focusing on having fun. Training has improved my fitness and well-being. It relieves my daily stress. I meet many friends. I laugh, I push myself. Training (any sport of hobby) is when I get to play. I think adults sometimes forget to go out and play. I've always loved sports and having fun- so training makes me a happy girl.
MM: What are some of the obstacles you've had to overcome in balancing training/life/etc?
The biggest obstacle I face in balancing training/ life/ work is time. I teach high school and this often gets stressful. There are many days I just want to (and do) come home and nap. To avoid this I set a training regimen each week and go straight from work to the gym, trail, etc. Though I'm up early for work, I am also out early, this affords me at least 3-4 hours to train in the afternoon. I'd love to do morning sessions but getting up at 4am isn't realistic for me. I deal with a lot of afternoon fatigue and have used food and supplements to help this. As I'm not married and don't have kids, all my time outside of work is my own so I'm lucky in that respect.
MM: What are your goals for 2011?
1.) Stay healthy and injury free. 2.) Improve my run both in speedwork and in the half-marathon. I'd really like to rock the Boulder 70.3. 3.) Have FUN!!!! I love Steamboat and I can't wait to do the Olympic race there in late August. The swim creeps me out with all the vines and underwater creepy things, but it is a super fun race! 4.) I want to be the best triathlete I can and to race strong and smart. I'm working with a new coach and pumped to spank it this season! :) MM: What role has nutrition played, not only in training but in your daily life as a Educator? Nutrition has played a key role in this last year. I finally learned how, via my Customized Nutrition Plan, what true nutrition is and how it works. I can identify what I'm craving and why. I've learned how to control portions, how to eat from the various food groups. Eating in this manner has helped my hamstring heal, improved my energy and sleep. I take a bit of time to shop and pre-cook on Sunday- this prepares me for the week. All of my meals are balanced, meaningful, and simple.
MM: What's your favorite MM product?
I love my protein shake- I mix chocolate MaxPro with BCAA (orange flavor) and Glutamine. This is tasty post-workout drink and also satisfies my sweets craving :) Yumm. |
I typically train about 10-12 hours a week: master's swimming at FAC 2-3x/ week. I ride 2-3x/ week and do a long ride on Saturday am. As the weather gets nicer, my long ride is definitely my favorite part of my week. I love the BTC group rides!!! I also try to run 3x/ week, with a long run early in the week. This winter I worked with a strength coach to focus on my weak spots and hopefully mitigate injuries!!! I also began working with Craig & Max Muscle to focus on my missing link- nutrition!!! This was a great decision and has changed my daily life, energy, and output in workouts. Now that I am on summer vacation my training will intensify and I am super psyched!!!!! Already this season I have trained harder (esp. in the run) and an 8 month hamstring injury has healed up. I attribute this to finally eating properly and learning how to use food as fuel. I have worked with Craig to identify my nutritional deficiencies and in our time together, we figured out I have been chronically undernourished for a very long time. We spent a lot of time getting a 'nutritional base' and teaching me how to eat. Before working with Craig, I know not to eat too many sweets and fast food, but I didn't really know what my body needed or why. In my first race of this season, I placed 1st and qualified to go to World Championships in Beijing. This was my goal and I'm very happy to have achieved it. Going forward I have many races this seasons and am going all out! I have the knowledge, coaching, and support I need- many thanks to the crew in Max Muscle Sports Nutrition in Boulder!!!!
